Willson Director on Past Year’s Achievements, Next Year’s Expectations

At the close of spring semester 2013, Nicholas Allen reflects on the Willson Center’s growth during the past year and looks forward to continuing progress and innovation in the fall. From Professor Allen’s column for our year-end newsletter:

The 2012–2013 academic year saw great progress for the Willson Center that has greatly increased our capacity to support and promote research in the humanities and arts at the University of Georgia.

In its inaugural year, the Willson Center’s Global Georgia Initiative was true to its goal of bringing the world to Georgia and Georgia to the world. In drawing international thought leaders to Athens and showcasing the globally significant accomplishments of our own faculty, the initiative will continue to advance UGA’s standing among the world’s leading academic institutions…

The university’s Spotlight on the Arts festival and Thinc. at UGA Entrepreneurial Week also emerged this year as key venues for Willson Center events programming. In addition to our on-campus lectures and panel discussions, we were proud to present exciting public events like the Athens premiere of the locally produced film Somebodies and our Songs @ Ciné music showcase. The coming year promises more innovative and inclusive programs throughout the university and the greater community…

We are proud and grateful for the support of the university community and Vice President for Research David Lee. Our mission is to support faculty research, and we keep that before us at all times. All of our events and initiatives are undertaken with the goal of showcasing your achievements and increasing funding for the arts and humanities. We thank you for your part in making 2012–2013 a rewarding academic year and look forward to greater success.
