Title: Peter Murray – ”Museums Without Walls: Art in the Landscape”

Peter Murray is the founding director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Prior to this he studied fine art and education, taught in general, further and higher education, and lectured extensively throughout Britain and overseas. Until 1975 he exhibited frequently, and has paintings, drawings and prints in several public and private collections. Ho founded the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 1977. He was awarded the title of OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1996 for services to the arts, and the title of CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2010.

Murray’s lecture will be a brief examination of sculpture in the landscape, touching upon land art in the United States, such as Spiral Jetty and Roden Crater, as well as Japanese, European and North American sculpture parks.  Reference will also be made to the English landscape designer Capability Brown, and his influence on the revolution of English parklands—in particular Bretton Hall, the home of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, an 18th-century estate transformed into a major international center of contemporary sculpture.
