Kim Truesdale – “Digesting Information”

Kim Truesdale - Digesting Information

I am a 2020 Masters of Fine Arts graduate of the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Digestion of information and misinformation during this uncertain time has caused many to comfort themselves with food. My multimedia series is a response to collected media and personal food narratives exploring comfort and discomfort, gender inequality, and masking. Women’s relationship with food and domestic space has been drastically altered due to the pandemic. Family recipes are being shared online as a means of social connection. Some people are cooking extravagantly while others are struggling for basic nourishment. And there is a lingering fear of food contamination and shortages. Isolation also raises issues of women’s well being and safety as the United Nations and other agencies have reported a global increase in domestic violence while some claim that the pandemic is dangerous for feminism sending women back to the gender role expectations of the 1950s.
