Guests for 2014 Global Georgia Initiative Speaker Series Announced

The Global Georgia Initiative was founded in 2013, and its inaugural speaker series featured distinguished guests from Athens and around the world. In its second year, Global Georgia will continue to showcase diverse artists, scholars and professionals from the local to the international.Global Georgia Initiative

The Global Georgia Initiative brings world class thinkers to Georgia. It presents global problems in local context by addressing pressing contemporary questions, including the economy, society, and the environment, with a focus on how the arts and humanities can intervene. Global Georgia combines the best in contemporary thinking and practice in the arts and humanities with related advances in the sciences and other areas.

The 2014 Global Georgia series begins January 30. Guests include the Cuban-born composer, conductor, and educator Tania León; journalist Pete McCommons, editor and publisher of Flagpole, Athens’ alternative weekly newspaper; the internationally renowned poet, playwright, and scholar Nathalie Handal; author, historian, and educator Paul Pressly, whose new book about the colonial Georgia coast was published by the UGA Press; and the acclaimed author and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo.
