Global Georgia Initiative kicks off with big crowds

The opening events of our 2017 Global Georgia Initiative Demain crowdhave drawn large, enthusiastic audiences to multiple venues on the UGA campus and around the Athens community. A presentation of the French environmental documentary Demain (Tomorrow) with a panel discussion at Ciné on Jan. 11 had to be expanded to the theater’s second screening room to accommodate the sold-out crowd, and the Jan. 17 lecture by choreographer Alonzo King in the New Dance Theatre drew an audience of close to 300, most of them UGA students.

Upcoming Global Georgia events are: the annual Betty Jean Craige Lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen in the UGA Chapel on Feb. 13; a symposium in partnership with Almeta Tulloss and Chef Hugh Acheson’s Seed Life Skills curriculum, including a panel discussion in the UGA Chapel, on Feb. 22; and a screening of the Sundance-selected 2017 documentary 500 Years followed by a discussion with filmmakers Pamela Yates and Paco de Onís at Ciné on March 2.

The The Global Georgia Initiative is an annual speaker and events series that presents global problems in local context with a focus on how the arts and humanities can intervene. The series is made possible by the support of private individuals and the Willson Center Board of Friends.
